What's the difference between an invention patent and a petty patent — which should I choose?
An invention patent requires a higher inventive step and protects for 20 years, but takes an average of 3-5 years. A petty patent uses a lower threshold, suits incremental improvements on existing work, protects for 6 years (renewable up to 10 years), and is granted much faster — around 6 months to 1 year. If your invention is a highly complex new innovation and you need long-term protection, choose an invention patent. If you need to get to market quickly or your business has a short product cycle, a petty patent fits better.
If I register a patent in Thailand, is it protected internationally too?
A patent only protects you in the country where it's registered, so registering in Thailand only protects you in Thailand. For international protection you need to file separately in each country, or file through the PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) system — Patent To You handles both domestic and international filing, so feel free to ask us.
What happens if my application is refused?
You can generally file an appeal or amend the application with the Department of Intellectual Property within the specified time limit. An experienced patent agent will help assess the right approach based on the grounds for refusal.
Why use a patent agent instead of filing myself?
Even a small mistake in drafting the claims can make the scope of protection too narrow — letting others legally work around it — or too broad, leading to refusal. An experienced patent agent will check for novelty upfront, draft comprehensive documents, and track progress with the Department throughout the process.
Roughly how much does it cost to register a patent?

How long is a patent protected, and does it need renewal?
An invention patent is protected for 20 years from the filing date, with no renewal like a trademark — but annual fees must be paid as set by the Department of Intellectual Property to maintain the right throughout the protection term. Failure to pay on time may cause the patent to lapse early.
Can a patent be transferred or licensed to someone else?
Yes. The owner can fully assign the patent to another party, or license it with a limited scope or term. This should be done through a written contract, and the assignment/license should be recorded with the Department of Intellectual Property to bind third parties.
How can I check the status of a patent application I've already filed?
You can check your application status yourself through the Department's IP search system at search.ipthailand.go.th using your application number, or have the patent agent handling your case track and report progress directly.
